VP, Accounting (Head of Accounting)

A U.S. subsidiary of an international financial services group is seeking an accomplished Vice President of Accounting to lead and manage all aspects of its accounting and financial operations. Reporting directly to the CFO, this senior leadership role is instrumental in ensuring financial integrity, regulatory compliance, and the smooth operation of treasury and corporate finance functions. Key Responsibilities:

Accounting Operations & Financial Reporting
  • Oversee daily, monthly, and annual accounting operations, including journal entries, reconciliations, and closings.

  • Ensure timely and accurate preparation of financial statements, cash flow reports, and management analyses in accordance with U.S. GAAP.

  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls, ensuring adherence to company policies and regulatory requirements.

  • Serve as the primary liaison with external audit and tax advisors, coordinating audits, quarterly/annual tax filings, and responding to inquiries.

Retail Finance Lease Accounting
  • Manage accounting processes related to retail finance leasing, including lease bookings, payments, residual tracking, and general ledger entries.

  • Ensure proper application of lease accounting standards and collaborate with operational teams to resolve discrepancies in lease transactions.

Corporate Finance & Treasury
  • Coordinate corporate loan administration, including documentation, bank communication, and application processes.

  • Lead the preparation of daily cash position reports and short-/long-term cash flow forecasts to support strategic financial planning.

  • Oversee loan-related payments and ensure compliance with financing terms and internal controls.

Leadership & Team Management
  • Supervise and develop accounting staff, fostering a high-performance culture grounded in accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

  • Assign tasks, monitor workflows, and evaluate team performance to ensure departmental objectives and deadlines are met.

  • Partner with HR and senior leadership on recruitment, evaluations, and training initiatives.

Compliance, Policy, and Process Optimization
  • Continuously assess and improve accounting processes, driving efficiency, accuracy, and scalability.

  • Stay current with accounting regulations, financial technologies, and industry best practices, and incorporate relevant advancements into operations.

  • Ensure documentation integrity, regulatory readiness, and alignment with broader organizational goals.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required; Master’s degree preferred.

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation is required.

  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 5 years in a management or leadership role.

  • Strong expertise in U.S. GAAP, tax compliance, financial reporting, and internal controls.

  • Experience working with financial institutions on corporate loans and leasing transactions is required.

  • Lease accounting skills and hands-on experience are highly desired.

  • Proven ability to manage cross-functional initiatives and maintain effective banking relationships.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting/ERP systems.

  • Excellent communication, leadership, and team development skills.

  • Japanese language ability or familiarity with Japanese corporate culture is preferred.
